Purpose-made joinery

What is purpose-made joinery?

Joinery made for one opening or one room, instead of a standard size cut down to fit. Old houses rarely have square, standard openings, so a door, window or staircase made to measure fits properly, looks right with the building and is fitted by the same team doing the rest of the work.Joinery made for one opening or one room, instead of a standard size cut down to fit.

Joinery we make and fit
  • Ledged, framed and panelled doors, inside and out
  • Oak front and back doors
  • Timber windows, including period and sash windows
  • Oak staircases
  • Fitted cupboards and storage
  • Replacement joinery to match the original on period and listed homes
Why joinery is better done by your builder

What you get when the joinery comes from the team doing the build:

  • Over 40 years building in Kent, as a local family business
  • One team from the first drawing to the final finish, so there is one person to talk to
  • Appointed contractor for English Heritage and Natural England
  • Our own plant and machinery, so groundworks start without waiting on a hire firm
  • A clear quote, with the warranty for your job explained in it
Joinery on period and listed homes

On an older building the aim is usually to match what was there, from the profile of a moulding to the way a door is ledged and braced. On a listed home there may be rules about what can change, too.

As an appointed contractor for English Heritage and Natural England, we look at how the original was made before we replace it.

Questions

What people ask

Based in Faversham, working across Kent.

How much does purpose-made joinery cost?

It depends on the size of the job, the materials and what's already there, and material prices move too often for a fixed list to stay honest. Tell us what you're planning and we'll come back with a quote for your job.

Can you match an existing door or window?

Yes. Matching old joinery is a big part of our work on period homes. We look at the original and make the new piece to suit it.

Do you fit the joinery as well?

Yes. We make it to fit and fit it ourselves, along with any repairs to the frame or wall around it, and the decorating after.

Can you make joinery for a listed building?

Yes. Risdon is an appointed contractor for English Heritage and Natural England, and joinery on period and listed homes is part of what we do.

What warranty do I get?

It depends on the job and the materials, so there isn't one blanket figure. Your quote sets out exactly what's covered for your project before you agree to anything.

Which parts of Kent do you cover?

We are based at Abbots Hill near Faversham and work across Kent. If you are not sure we cover you, ask and we will tell you straight.
